This piece is one of a new series I am creating that is inspired by Diaz de Los Muertos, or day of the dead. To quote wikipedia “Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de los Muertos) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. It is particularly celebrated in Mexico, where it is a national holiday, and all banks are closed. The celebration takes place on October 30th, in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day (November 2). ”
I really enjoy the intricate and fun ways that skulls are decorated for this holiday, as well as the spirit of the holiday, which pays homage to the loved ones that have passed. Though this is a Mexican holiday, when I visited New Orleans I often felt that it would have been easy to see it celebrated on their streets.
